I am a seller of many items through the Internet Shopping systems I shall call:"AUCTION HOUSES" and the like, I started to specislize in selling Many versions of "AV Products from Symantec, McAfee, Norton, Kapersky, AVG, and any I would try and be totally satisfied with.
y machines started getting "itchy" and erratic.
I got down to the Utilities, AV's and Browsers, which charged you for a multi screwing, and no phone #'s, or customer service to speak of, and got tired of using MILITARY SPELLING to Eastern Indians who were most polite, but as blood thirsty as and American or of it's most ferocious enemies.
I have made decent money, but in making a "study" (I am retired and disabled)[Vietnam Vet], I have perfected my sales and warrantees if deserved, )NO MORE SPACE)

I canceled my McAfee account today. I used the 1-866-736-3971 number and had few problem. However, at the beginning of the call, the automated voice said they would soon be changing their number to 1-866-622-3911. Maybe the other number became too easy to find.

I am really frustrated that no one is willing to do any thing on such related matter. Uhh.... where should we take this matter who would listen and do something!!!!!!!!!!!! I think it is up to us to protect each other from not ripped off unreasonably...

The interesting thing about the issue is in order to cancel the auto-renewal option you have to call them, but to turn it on you can do that by login into their web site :)

Here is the email I received from the McAfee after I called them to cancel the auto-renewal option:

Dear XXX,

This email confirms that your Always On Protection has been cancelled for XXX.

Always On Protection ensures that your computer security protection is always up-to-date by automatically renewing your license annually. Without the Always On Protection feature, your PC will not be up-to-date as soon as your subscription expires.

If you want to reactivate the Always On Protection feature so there's no lapse in your McAfee security, simply:

1. Log-in to "My Account" and you will see your product(s) and the expiration date(s).

==> https://home.mcafee.com/Secure/Protected/Login.aspx

2. Click on "My Profile" and ensure your billing information is current and complete.

3. On the left hand side, click on "Auto-Renewal-Setup," then "My Auto-Renewal Settings," enable the Always On Protection, and click "Done."

Please do not reply to this email. Thank you.

Sincerely,
The McAfee Team

J.

Thank goodness I saw this blog! It's still quite difficult to cancel auto renewal with McAfee. I tried calling their 800 number on their website. "Closed, please call back during business hours." Ugh! I found this site, called the 408-992-8599, talked to some indian guy named Kevin, and he claimed in about 2 business days, my auto renewal information will be taken out of the system and I would get an email. I got the email right away but the info is still in their system as of less than an hour after canceling auto renewal. Yeah right, we shall see. I've got until March 14 of 2010 (so actually Feb 14 2010 to make sure my information is out of their system. I've found a FREE, good anti virus that my tech recommends so I'm going to let my McAfee expire. I have a reminder note to myself to completely remove McAfee off my computer on January 14 2010 so they don't auto renew me that way. When it get's closer to my date, I will notify my bank of the amount and company so they can block any charge from McAfee. Thank you to everyone as I hope to nip this in the bud before it gets to that horrible point where they auto charge me!

An update to my previous blog. I registered myself at the McAfee forum and complained in there. Lo and behold, my credit card info was removed later that very same day, and I was told by a moderator that I shouldn't have to remove the software, he was sorry to see me go etc., blah blah yadda yadda. He tried to sneak a note in there about "If your new software ever fails that your friend recommended and ever want to return to McAfee..." I did reply and stated "I will not be returning to McAfee (nor Norton so you can be rest assured I didn't go to your nemisis). Yes, he's a friend, but he's my computer tech first and foremost and if that software ever fails, I will go with AVG." It was quite funny let me tell you. I can't wait till my subscription runs out as my computer tech was right-- McAfee is a major memory hog, with lots of fluff and between McAfee and Norton constantly being hacked/threatened etc, it's better to go with a not so popular/hardly known about, but good software. So he told me about this free software that doesn't hog memory that he uses on all his machines at his business, has been using it for about 3 years and never had any problem. Good luck everyone! I will try to remember to update when it gets close to my McAfee subsription running out in March 2010 and let you know if I had any further problems.

OK- so this scam is still being used. On Sept 22 McAfee automatically renewed my subscription to "Internet Security Suite" (for 2 users) at the cost of about $85. I checked their website and noticed that they are offering a newer product,"Total Protection 2010" (up to 3 users) for just $39.99! At first I thought there had been an oversight on their part and I was going to send them an email asking for clarification when I got home. I'm glad I did a web search for this because now I see this is done deliberately on their part. The only thing I will do now is CANCEL my McAfee subscription permanently!
Shame on McAfee - after this many years in the business and the one thing they are best at is losing customers.

An email from McAfee arrived saying they had automatically renewed my subscription to Viruscan Plus for $39.95. Since I was now using Symantec products on all my computers, I didnt want to renew it so I started the dreaded 'cancellation' process. It's usually very hard to stop/cancel/return some product or service than it is to buy it. This isn't a mistake, it's the plan. The strategy is to make it hard. Protect the sale, screw the customer (and the brand). If its true, it qualifies as one of Mikes Bad Companies. Is McAfee one of them?

I am getting closer to getting to a person: I have to fill out a 'ticket'. Presumable to make me line up for something, but no matter, I was finally going to get to someone. At this point I wondered what they charge on their site for the product. Was the renewal a good deal as claimed? I went to a fresh McAfee site (not from my cancellation ticket page) and found they offered the product new for $19.95. HALF of what they charged me for the good deal renewal. HALF!! This wasn't shaping up for a good grade from Mike!

I clicked on it and spent 20 minutes trying to cancel. Try it. Nothing works. So I spent 10 minutes trying to contact Customer Support. Heh, heh, you know what that does, leads you into a Knowledge Base of everything but what you want. Delay, delay, obfuscate, etc. This isnt looking good for a high rating from Mike.
